The Lee
Clarion
The
Lee Clarion is
the university's
student-run bi-monthly
newspaper. Currently it
runs as a 12-page
broad sheet. The scholarshiped student
editorial staff works
with other students who
receive academic
practicum credit to
produce campus news
every other week. A
mainstay on campus for
more than 20 years, the
Lee Clarion
provides hands-on
experience in meeting
publication deadlines as
well as in writing,
editing, ad sales, ad
designs, photography and
publication design.
Student-produced from
start to finish, the
paper also affords
students terrific résumé
and professional
portfolio material for
life after Lee.
The Vindagua
The student yearbook has
an unusual name with a
history dating back to
the 1940s. The
original
name, “Vindauga” is the
Old Norse word from
which our word “window”
is derived. The
originators of the name
felt that the college
annual provided a window
to the school year, and
at that time, our sports
teams were known as the
Vikings. A few
years after its launch,
the "u" and "g"
accidentally got
switched in publication
and "Vindagua" was born.
Subsequent editors
apparently liked the
sound of the new word
and kept it until the
1980's when the book
went back to the
original spelling for
eight editions. In
1988 the decision was
made to revert to Vindagua. By then,
Lee sports were known as
Flames instead of
Vikings and there seemed
to be no reason to stick
to accurate Old Norse!
Vindagua is a
word unique to our
campus and it continues
to offer a window into
all of Lee's fascinating
diversity.
The
Vindagua provides
opportunities for
students to gain
valuable hands-on
experience in advanced
photography, feature
writing and cutting-edge
publication design. The
2001-02 Lee University
Yearbook received the
College Media Advisers
Golden Apple Award,
first place in its
category of 300-page
books.
